Robert Waring was the son of Olaf and Olga Waring. He was an officer in the U. S. Foreign Service with postings in Rabat, Morocco; Athens, Greece; London, England; Berlin, Germany; Vienna, Austria and Beirut, Lebanon. In 1946, Mr. Waring married Irene Pollak while on assignment in Rabat. Thirty years later, in 1976, while Mr. Waring was the Counselor for Economic Affairs at the Beirut Embassy, he, the Ambassador, Francis E. Meloy, Jr. and a driver (Zuhair Mohammed Moghrabi) were kidnapped and assassinated by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine as they crossed the Green Line, between Beirut's Christian and Muslim sectors, on their way to meet with President-elect Sarkis. On June 17 President Ford designated Ambassador L. Dean Brown as his Personal Representative to go to Damascus, Syria, to accompany the bodies of slain American officials to the United States. A few days later, Mr. Waring's family and his body arrived at Andrews Air Force Base. His wife, Irene and their children - Richard, Karen, Mickey and Nina were greeted by President Ford and Secretary of State, Dr. Kissinger. A photo of the welcoming dignitaries is at the Gerald R Ford Library website. A memorial mass was held at the Washington Cathedral with burial at Arlington Cemetery. Mr. Waring is also honored on a plaque at the U.S. Embassy Beirut Memorial and through the AFSA Memorial Plaques, C Street Lobby, Truman Building, Washington D.C.
