John married his first wife, Alphonsine Therian on 20 July 1854 and they had 3 children (they're listed as Mrs. Isaac P Roy, Placid, and another named Joseph who died when he was 8). He married his second wife Edgemere Therian (Alphonsine's sister) on 20 July 1860.
Edgemere's obituary does mention that Placid and Mrs. Isaac Roy were her step-children…

OBITUARY
John Sharkey Dead - Old and Honored Citizen Passes to his Reward
John Sharkey son of Placid and Flavian Sharkey was born Dec. 22, 1834, near St. John's Quebec Canada, and came to U.S. with his parents in the year 1848 and settled near Beebetown on the Kankakee river where he grew to young manhood sharing the hardships along with early settlers of this community.
July 20th 1854, he was married to Miss Edgemere Therian who preceded him in death April 21st 1919. To this union several children were born six of whom survive: Mrs. Isaac P. Roy, of Wakita, Okla.; Placid, Joseph, and Lewis, of this place. Samuel of Hegewich, Ill.; and Frank of Niles, Mich. Two sons Levi and Charles died only a few years ago. He also leaves five sisters and one brother: Mrs. Julius Lanone and Mrs. Adella Barney of Marquette, Kansas; Mrs. Olive Bouchard, St. Anne. Mrs. Matilda Allard, MOmence; Mary Ann Lacoste, Shawnee. Okla.; Moses Sharkey of Kankakee; besides many other relatives and friends to mourn his departure.
In the year of 1878, he together with his family emigrated to Kansas, settling near Kingman, engaged in farming but returned to Illinois in 1889, followed his trade thatof a mason. Except these eleven years spent in Kansas his entire life was spent in and near this place.
He was a Christian in all its true sense and for many years was a faithful member of Momence Baptist church. Although in feeble health for several months he was able to be about most of the time. His last illness was of short duration and he passed away in the home of his son Lewis Sharkey, on the Southside Friday October 19th at 10 o'clock a.m. from bronchial pneumonia.
Funeral services were held Monday at 10:30 o'clock from the Baptist church, Rev. W.G. Crook officiating. Burial at Mt. Ayr cemetery
Floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. The casket bearers were selected from among grandsons of the deceased. Those who attended the funeral from out-of-town were: Mr. and Mrs. Moses Sharkey, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Sharkey, and Mr. and Mrs. Willie Castongua, of Kankakee, Mrs. Olive Bouchard, St. Anne, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Hall, Goodland, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. John Hall, Goodland, Ind., ? Taylor, Harvey, Ill., Miss Pearl Hatton, Grant Park, Will Crawford and wife Sherburaville, Harold Sharkey and family of Hammond, Ind., Frank Sharkey and family of Nilesw, Michigan, Sam Sharkey of Hegewich, Ill.
