James Holmes, 71, died June 27th at the V.A. Medical Center in Gainesville following a brief illness.
A native of Georgia, he had lived in Hastings for the past 25 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church where he served on the Trustee Board.
He is survived by his wife Verdell Holmes of Hastings; eight daughters, Marcella Holmes and Bertha Holmes, both of Gainesville, Alfrieda Holmes of New York City, Marion Miller of Henderson, N.C., Bernice Williams and Janet Stanley, both of Melbourne, Annie Harris of Columbus, Ga., and Obetta Session of New York City; three sons, Troy Lee Holmes and Robert Smith of Daytona Beach, and Theodore Smith of West Palm Beach; one sister, Marie Cole of St. Petersburg; 35 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the My. Zion A.M.E. Church in Hastings with the Rev. W. H. Elmore, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Masonic Cemetery in Hastings.
D. A. Boyd & Sons Funeral Home in Palatka is handling arrangements.
