Retired Educator AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Monday, June 8, 2009 at University Hospital after a brief illness, Mrs. Betty S. Walker of Turpin Street. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 710 East Cedar Street, with Reverend Dr. J. R. Hatney officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. The funeral procession will leave the residence at 10:15 a.m. Donations may be made to: NCA Augusta Dialysis Center, 1000 Telfair Street, Augusta, GA 30901. Mrs. Walker received her Bachelors Degree from Paine College and her Masters Degree in Education from South Carolina State. She was an educator in the Richmond County School System as a Special Education Teacher and Special Education Consultant. She also taught at the Augusta State Medical Prison. She was an active member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she served on the Shepherd Staff, Tribe of Benjamin, and the J.S. Wright Adult Sunday School Class. She was an active member of the following organizations Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Les Femmes Fatales Bridge Club, National Association of University Women, BBB's, and a volunteer for AARP. In addition, she was the past regional volunteer leader for AARP Region 6. She also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Mrs. Walker was the wife of the late Mr. James Lanier Walker. She was also preceded in death by her father the late Earnest Shuemake, and brother the late Harold Shuemake. Survivors include her son, Brent (Angie) Walker; her grandchildren, Brittany Walker and Brianna Walker; her loving mother, Mary Shuemake,of Augusta; siblings, Barbara and Bishop Clarence Carr, Earnestine and Robert Stokes, all of Atlanta, George Shuemake of Augusta; one aunt Esther Brawner of Greenwich, C.T; niece and nephews, Leslie Carr, Mark (Jessica) Carr of Atlanta, Saungaylia (Kendall) Randolph of Tallahassee, FL, Quanda Southward of Augusta and Oba Shuemake of Atlanta; and a host of other relatives and friends.
