Thomas Mooney was born in Tennessee on September 29,1824. His family moved to Yalobusha County, Mississippi, sometime between 1830 and 1834. Marriage record in Yalobusha show that his brother, Charles , married Elizabeth Sparks in November 1834 and brother John Barton, married Telitha Adaline McCoy on March 23,1843. The three brothers came to Texas about 1845.
Thomas Mooney probably met future wife, Naomi Elums Holt, while he lived in Yalobusha County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Holt,who had moved to Mississippi from Murpfreesboro,Tennessee. The Mooneys and Holts probably came to Texas together. In her application for a Confederate widow's pension, Naomi states that she and Thomas were married in Nacogdoches County in 1845. This must have been soon after they arrived. No record of marriage has been found in Nacogdoches or Angelina Counties.
In 1848, the Mooneys and Holts had settled in Angelina County, Texas. In Marion, Angelina County, August 21, 1848, Thomas Mooney was elected Constable of Beat no.2. Charles H. Mooney was elected Justice of the Peace Beat no.2. Benjamin Holt was elected County Terasurer Beat no.2 and Ephraim Finley, was elected Chief Justice Beat. Ephraim was married to Martha Coleman, her brother John married Martha Holt. Both couplers were married in Yalobusha County in 1947.
Sometime between 1850-1860, Thomas and John Barton, and his father-in-law Benjamin Holt moved to Nacogdoches County. Barton settled in the Etoile area, Thomas and Benjamin Holt settled in the area of Pine Knot, which is east of Etoile. Pine Knot Cemetery is all that's left of the Community. Elizabeth Holt had died and Benjamin married Nancy Stearnes on January 21,1858. Benjamin died about four years later.
Thomas and Naomi raised nine children: [1]. William Henry was born May 9,1849 and on Febuary 1,1872, married Louvenis A. Morrison, daughter of James M. and Harriet Morrison. He died Febuary 2,1935, buried Fairview Cemetery. [2]. Solomon Holt was born August 16,1852 and on January 4,1872 he married Mary Elender Morrison, sister to Louvenis. He died August 2, 1899, buried Pine Knot Cemetery. [3]. John Allen was born April 10,1855. He married Martha L. Morrison on January 16,1879, also a sister to Louvenis and Mary. He died August 18,1933, buried Lower Chireno Cemetery. [4[. Thomas J. was born September 13,1857 and married Sarah Pate on November 29,1878. He moved out of the county and little is known of him except that he lived in Robertson County, Texas. He died December 13,1934 in Harris County, Texas. [5]. Ann Elizabeth was born November 12,1861, and on June 14,1887 she became the second wife of Mayfield Sargent. She died December 24,1921, buried Pine Knot Cemetery. [6]. Benjamin Lafayette was born on April 9,1866. He married Allie Elizabeth Crawford on December 14,1899. He died April 18,1940, buried Pine Knot Cemetery. [7]. Estells was born February 11,1868. She married Rve. Marion Thomas Murray on October 9,1918, as his second wife. She died February 9, 1930, buried Pine Knot Cemetery. [8]. Onora (Nola) was born April 7,1872. Married James W. (Jim) Lowery on October 17,1907 as his second wife. She died in childbirth in 1911 or 1912. [9]. Lucinda E. (Lucy) was born March 8,1875. On January 14,1895, she became the second wife of Asa H. Barnett. She died December 25,1929.
Thomas was a carpenter by trade and a Baptist by faith. He served as a deacon in the Old Prospect Baptist Church in the community of Pine Knot. He served in C.S.A. Company A.,11th Texas Regiment, also Company B., 3rd Brigade Texas State Troops. He entered as a private and was a sergeant at the close of his service, which was a little over three years. He was captured at Fort De Russey, Louisiana, on March 14,1864, and was exchanged July 22,1864. He returned to Nacogdoches and his family, and he and Naomi lived out their lives in the community of Pine Knot. Thomas died on July 29,1907 and Naomi died October 26,1910. They are both buried in Pine Knot Cemetery, along with several of their children, grandchildren, and other relatives.
