Nobility. He succeeded his father Guglielmo Gonzaga in 1587 as Duke of Mantua and Montferrat. In 1581, he married Margherita Farnese, a daughter of Alessandro Farnese, at Piacenza. The marriage stayed childless and was annulled after two years. She became a nun and died in 1643 in a monastery in Parma. A year later he married Eleonora de Medici one of the two daughters of Francesco I of Tuscany that survived their childhood. He was one of the great Renaissance princes and made Mantua a centre of art in Italy. He appointed, among others, Torquato Tasso and Claudio Monteverdi to his court, the latter stayed 25 years, until Vincenzo's death. From a visit to Flanders, he brought the young Rubens back to his court. Rubens received his first major commissions here. He was later sent on diplomatic missions to the Spanish court and after that went to Paris where he worked for Vincenzo's sister-in-law, Maria de Medici as her court painter.
