He was destined for a ecclesiastical career and was made cardinal in 1607. When his elder brother died in 1612 he succeeded as Duke of Mantua and Duke of Montferrat. He married Caterina de Medici in 1617 but the marriage remained childless. He had an illegitimate son by Camilla Faà di Bruno, to whom he was secretly married for a year.
