Alfred received his formal education in the Albemarle County School System and was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired after many years of dedicated service at Frank IX and Sons; and he also farmed the land for many years. Doing his spare time he was an avid Gardner and enjoyed yard work.
He leaves to cherish his memory 4 sons, Alfred Barbour and wife, Leslie of Waynesboro, VA., Kenneth Barbour and wife, Jackie of Waynesboro, Theodore Barbour and wife, Connie of Charlottesville, and Gregory Barbour and wife, Sue of Winchester, VA.; 4 stepsons, Frankie Barbour and wife, Michelle of Ruckersville, VA., Christopher Barbour and wife, Nancy of Earlysville, VA., Cornell Barbour and friend, Melinda of Charlottesville, and Garnett Barbour and wife, Tracy of Charlottesville.; 4 daughters, Katherine Barbour of Charlottesville, Patricia Barbour, Carolyn Barbour, and Debbie Barbour all of Crozet, VA.; 1 stepdaughter, Shelia Avery and special friend Jeff Gantt of Fredericksburg, VA.; devoted ex-wife, Martha Barbour; and a daughter-in-law, Melissa Barbour of Afton, VA.; 41 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren; a special friend Matthew Durrett; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 23, 2009 at Piedmont Baptist Church, Yancey Mills, VA with Rev. Philip Butler officiating. Interment followed at the Culpeper National Cemetery.
