Arvel Melvin Swanson
Taylorsville, N.C. - Arvel Melvin Swanson, 89, of Taylorsville, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Kate B Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born March 31, 1920, in Cherokee County to the late James Swanson and Josie Victoria Mason Swanson.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a member of Temple Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Stella Swanson, and his second wife, Audrey Jane Swanson. He is survived by one son, Jim Swanson of Maiden; three daughters, Cathie Ann Hodnett of Hickory, Shirley Ann Smith of Mocksville and Connie Eller of Lexington; one sister, Willa McClure of Georgia; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at noon today, Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Temple Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Byron Repass will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military rites will be provided by members of Hiddenite Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10,000 and Taylorsville VFW Post 5466. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon today, Wednesday, prior to the funeral hour.
Memorials may be given to Temple Hill Baptist Church, 4400 Temple Hill Church Road, Granite Falls, N.C. 28630.
