Lonnie Ward

A retired coal miner, Lonnie Ward, 73, of Oak Ridge, died Nov. 17 at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a long illness. He had worked in the Windrock mines for 43 years before retiring. He began when he was 14. Ward was born in Lower Windrock near Oliver Springs and was raised there.He moved to 108 Jersey Lane in Oak Ridge after his retirement. He attended Union Valley Baptist Church in Windrock. During World War II he served with the Army in the Pacific Theatre. As a young man, he enjoyed playing baseball and liked to fish, hunt and garden. A twin Lawrence Ward, died in France during WW II. Two other brothers preceded him in death, Howard H.Ward and Richard (Bid) Ward.Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Susie Mae Roberson Ward, three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Wanda Ward , Curtis and Sally Ward and Kevin and Fran Ward, all of Oak Ridge, a daughter, Cheri Baker of Coalfield, three sisters, Nellie Walters of Coalfield,Minnie Bowling of Frost Bottom community and Ruth Lively of Oliver Springs,and seven grandchildren.Services were held Saturday in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev.Hoye Bunch officiating. A graveside service was held Sunday in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Union Valley Baptist Church, Windrock, Oliver Springs, TN 37840.
