Vern Nelson, son of the late Ambert Nelson and Minnie McQueen Nelson was born on June 20, 1930 at Exeter, Missouri and departed this life in the John J. Pershing Veterans Administration Medical Center at Poplar Bluff on April 8, 2009, at the age of 78.
Mr. Nelson was of the Church of Christ Faith, a retired Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, a member of the Malden American Legion Post #293, the Air Force Sergeant's Association, a life-member of the Disabled American Veterans.
While serving in the Air Force, he received the following: The Japanese Occupational Ribbon; The Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp and Four Loops; The National Defense Service Medal with One Bronze Star; The Air Force Longevity Service Award with Two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award; The Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters; The Air Force Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster; The Vietnam Service Medal with One Bronze Star; The Award for Patriotic Service from the State of Missouri Veterans Recognition Program; The Vietnam Medal, Medallion and Certificate; and the Korean Medal Medallion and Certificate.
He was united in marriage to Dora Brown on December 20, 1951 at Piggott, Ark. Mrs. Nelson survives of the home in Bernie.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and Ronald Mays of Bernie; one grandson, Derek Mays; one brother-in-law, Wilbur Black of Wichita, Kan.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Wade Nelson, Clifford Nelson, Vance Nelson, Dennis Nelson, Carroll Nelson, Cecil Nelson and Arnold Nelson; five sisters, Winnie Metcalf, Lola Ethridge, Ruth Brown, Mary Lou Armstrong and Fern Black.
Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie from 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Stan Dauck officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2009, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield.
