Ethel Frances Dixon Stanley was born January 28, 1917 in Mountville, Ga, the eldest daughter of seven children to the late Mr. & Mrs. (Cora Griggs) William Dixon.

Her family later moved to Atlanta where she attended West Lake Elementary School, Booker T. Washington High School where she graduated in the top ten percent of her class and was head majorette and a saxophone player in the band.

She married Leon Lamar, Sr. and later married Archie Stanley, Sr. For more than 40 years, along with Archie, Ethel built a loving home for all their children and served her community as a Christian wife, mother, homemaker, professional nurse and seamstress, Substitute teacher in the Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County Poll Supervisor and EOA senior transportation supervisor until her retirement in 1981.

As a Gary Road leader she was instrumental in chartering the Center Hill Community in the City of Atlanta and appointed by then Mayor Ivan Allen as a steering committee member to formulate ideas and plans to integrate the Atlanta Public Schools.

Ethel Stanley was the inspiration and force behind electing her two youngest daughters to the Georgia Legislature as State Representatives.

She was a founding member of The Berean Bible Baptist Church which held weekly Wednesday Night Bible Study at her home before its inception. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where her son-in-law Rodney K. Turner is Pastor.

On Monday night, April 6, 2009, Ethel exited this life after a gallant battle with Alzheimer's to go home to be with the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Stanley Sr.; son, Jerry Walter Stanley and most recently her daughter, Byrdene Carolyn Stanley-Gaines.

She leaves a legacy of many fun and loving memories to be cherished by her loving family who will miss her so very much; sons, Leon Lamar Jr., Archie Stanley Jr. (Frankie); daughters, Thelma Godfrey of Dublin, Ga., Joan Stanley-Lee, Cora Stanley, Pamela Stanley and LaNett Stanley-Turner (Rodney); other daughters in law, Florence Lamar and Beverly Bolton Stanley; two sisters, Virginia Edwards & Bessie Pruitt both of Detroit, Mi, over 60 grandchildren, great grand children and great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, family, neighbors and friends.

Services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2009, 12 Noon, Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 441 Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. In state 11 AM. Rev. Rodney K. Turner, Pastor. Interment Lincoln Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the church at 11:30 AM on the day of service. Viewing today 2-9 PM at Murray Brothers Cascade Chapel, 1199 Utoy Springs Rd.
