Douglas Reynolds

This is the grave of Douglas Reynolds. Doug was born in January, 1948 in New Brunswick and died on September 12, 1999 after a battle with cancer. We're stopping here to tell you about Doug and to show you how history of notable people does not just happen in olden times and how any of us can be a hero.. In Doug's short time with us he contributed a good deal to St. Peter's and left an indelible mark on our past and future.

Doug joined St. Peter's in 1991. He was a volunteer at our Wednesday Night Suppers, headed up fundraising efforts, ran a successful small group ministry and led a group to restore some of the headstones in this very cemetery. By 1994 he had become the Chairman of the Stewardship Committee. Stewardship is probably one of the most difficult of our ministries because it includes asking people for money. Stewardship is the vehicle by which members of the congregation pledge to give of their time, talent and treasures to support the work of the Church. In fact one of the most successful campaigns that Doug ran was just that…explaining to people that contributing to the church was not just monetary, but also encompassed people's talents and skills through volunteering. Through Doug's explanations, it was a new concept that was well accepted by the folks at St. Peter's.

Doug remained the Stewardship Chairman for a good many years. Along the way he was also elected to the Vestry and then was elected our Senior Warden in 1998. The Senior Warden is the head of the Church after the Rector. Doug didn't know it at the time, but he was in for a difficult road in his position. During his tenure, our former Rector resigned and we had to hire an Interim Rector. An Interim is a Rector who comes in and takes charge of the church while a search is conducted for a new rector. Doug's gentle, but firm leadership was invaluable during this time of transition. He led the congregation through this period with confidence and responsible understanding for the transition period.

Doug was a Supervisor in charge of Turbo Machinery Operations at TOSCO in Linden. He was serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He was married to Carol and they had one daughter, Katie. Both Carol and Katie are still very active parishioners at St. Peter's.

Doug's memory lives on at St. Peter's. No, he may not make the history books as a war hero or great philosopher or corporate magnate, but heroes are not always public figures. Honoring those around us who have impacted lives and left a legacy in any way is as important as those who have chapters in books devoted to them. So we remember Doug as a cherished member of our family..one with whom we laughed, cried, celebrated and worshipped. Those are events worthy of recognition and honor.
