The death of our good old friend, John Mock, at his home north of town Sunday noon again brings back to us the sad fact that the old settlers who made this county what it is, are rapidly passing away. Mr. Mock has been a long and patient sufferer from disease but the immediate cause of his death was pneumonia.
John Mock was born in Prussia, 14 November 1836, so was nearing his seventieth anniversary. He crossed the ocean when but 9 years old, living in Davenport, Iowa until 1850 when his folks move to Hampton,Illinois. Here he remained until 1869, since which time he has been our good friend and neighbor here. He married Mary Meinhardt in 1858 and to them were born 15 children, nine of yet whom are living and in this vicinity. They are Valentine, James, William, John, Mrs. Elizabeth Schmitz, Mrs. Emma Rickstatter, Mrs. Carrie Zeller, Mrs. Josephine Schilling, and Miss Pauline. Three sisters and two brothers survive him.
His funeral occurred from the Catholic Church at 9:30 Wednesday. An extremely large number of his life-time friends and neighbors being present to pay their last respects. Phillip Meinhardt’s of Eldridge, Iowa was down to attend it

The family lived on a farm N/E of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church where the family were members. He served as the Justice of Peace many years and was one of the more influential citizens of the area.
