Just as the bright rays of sunshine were breaking into a new day, a beautiful life passed into the Great Beyond. Henry Johnson was born March 9, 1829, in Smith county, West Virginia, and died July 12th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. J. Owens, 416 West Allen street, with whom he had made his home for nearly 22 years. He had been in ill health for over a year, and although he suffered intense pain, he was a patient sufferer, always thinking not of himself, but the comfort of others about him. Deceased was married to Malinda Claunch, in 1850, in Kentucky, Alaska county, and came to Missouri in the 70s. Seven children were born to this union - two sons and five daughters. his wife and three children preceded him to the better world years ago. He gave his heart to Jesus when a young man and united with the M. E. church, South, and was a faithful follower of Jesus until death. His life of 90 years was well spent. His children and grand children will ever remember his kind heart and loving smile, and how he always taught them to go in the paths of right. Weep not dear ones, for he is waiting for you with anxiety as he did here on earth. He leaves to mourn his death the following children - W. J. Johnson, Horton, Kas.; J. A. Johnson, Butler, Mo.; Mrs. A. J. Owens, Clinton, and Mrs. W. S. Pumphrey - Deepwater; also 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, Edgar and Alice Carpenter. Short funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Owens, Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, by Rev. Ruyle, and the remains taken to Bates county, where funeral services were held at the Bethel church and the remains laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery, where a large number of people had gathered to pay their last respects to this fine Christian gentleman.
