Besse was the second daughter, and fourth of six children bor to John Wallace Godfrey and his wife Letitia Roberts, of Laurens County, SC. She married Ernest Lamont Field (1895-1964, a son of Ernest Marion Field and his wife Mary Rhetta Bell.) Lamont, as he was called, and Besse had two children, Ernest Lamont Field, Jr. (living in Greenville, SC), and the late Nancy Bell Field (1925-1998, Mrs. James Oliver Hodges IV).
