115 Squadron's Avro Lancaster II (#DS683), with an aircrew of seven, took off from RAF Little Snoring for a night air operation over Hanover, Germany. Having reached the targeted area and beginning its bombing run, DS683 was attacked and damaged by a German night-fighter; Sergeant Allen was killed in the attack and two of his aircrew mates were injured. The Lancaster was able to make the flight back to base, crash-landing at the Little Snoring aerodrome.
