AGED CITIZEN DIES AT GOOD OLD AGE AFTER SHORT ILLNESS.

Joseph M. Schuler, well-known resident of Huntingburgh, died at his home in this city, Saturday morning, September 15, at 4:45 o'clock, aged 86 years and 10 days, having had a birthday on the 5th inst. Mr. Schuler had only been ill for the past two weeks, and was only seriously ill for about five days. He had a severe attack of bowel trouble which caused his death. He had always been a healthy man, and this was only about the second sick spell in all his life, and he was conscious to the end in this, his last illness.

Deceased was born in Sattel, Switzerland, September 5, 1837, where he married Josephine Schuler, a lady of the same name as his, but not a relative. They were married in 1862 and five sons were born to them in Switzerland. In 1868 Mr. Schuler came to America settling in Louisville, and in 1870, two years later, his wife and sons joined him in Louisville, where they remained until 1883 when they moved to this county, settling on the Englert farm, now owned by Max Englert, later they moved onto the Hoing farm, and in 1899 moved to Huntingburgh, where he resided ever since. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Schuler, two of them preceding the parents in death, one in infancy, and the other aged 19 years. The wife and mother died October 17 1911, since which time Mr. Schuler's daughter, Mrs. Leander Kirwer resided with him.

Mr. Schuler was a dairy man and cheese maker by profession, and almost everyone of our older citizens can recall what wonderful cheese he used to make. Since coming to America he has made five trips to his old home in Switzerland returning from the last trip June 11, having been away eight months. He was the last of his family.

Mr. Schuler was a wonderful man for his years, and was as active as ever, until the last two weeks of his life when he was sicken with illness. He always had a cheery greeting for everyone, and was well-liked by all who knew him. He was a faithful member of St. Mary's congregation, and funeral vices were held there on Monday morning at 8:00 o'clock., Rv. Schoeppner, officiating.

Mr. Schuler is survived by the following children: Joseph M. Schuler, Moonshine, Texas; Dominik F. Schuler, Louisville; Frank Schuler, Troy, Ohio; Thomas Schuler, Georgetown; Albert Schuler, Waynesburg, Ky; Charles Joseph Schuler, Plainview, Texas; Casper Schuler, Ferdinand;Mrs. Josephine Heitz-Schuler and Mrs. Leander Kirwer-Schuler, Huntingburgh, all of whom but two were at his funeral. Fifty grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren survive.

Those from out-of-town who attended the funeral were Charles Schuler, St. Matthews, Ky., Mrs. Agatha Ulrich and son Paul, Louisville; Conrad Eckert, Mr. and Mrs. Kremp and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Kremp of Jasper; Joe Sonderman and Mrs. Jon Weber and family of Ferdinand.
