He was born Feb. 4, 1922, in Floyd County, Ky., to Amos and Lee Wright Prater, who preceded him in death. On Sept. 11, 1943, he married Rubena "Ruby" Patton, who survives in McGuffey.

Mr. Prater retired in 1981 as an assembler from Superior Coach/Sheller Globe Division. He was a member of McGuffey Church of Christ. He had served on the McGuffey Village Council for several years. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8832, Roundhead. He had been a Cub Scout leader and a member of the McGuffey Volunteer Fire Department. He was a founding member of the McGuffey Conservation Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he participated in the landing on Omaha Beach. On Oct. 27, 2002, he received special congressional recognition for the Battle of Normandy/Liberation of France from U.S. Rep. Michael Oxley.

Survivors also include a daughter, Beverly (Roy) Justice of Alger; a daughter-in-law, Linda Prater of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Russell (Maggie) Prater of McGuffey and Garry (Nancy) Prater of Lima; three sisters, Bethel Collins of Belle Center, Nella (Robert) Messick of Kenton and Charlotte Prater of Lima; and five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Douglas Prater, who died May 17, 1995; and a grandson, Phillip Justice.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at McGuffey Church of Christ. Pastor Scot Caley will officiate. Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger.
