Folk Figure. In the 1980s, the grave of Eleanor Rigby was discovered near Liverpool in the cemetery of St. Peter's Parish Church Woolton Merseyside, England. On July 6, 1957, this location was noted as where musicians John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met. Paul McCartney conceded years later that he was influenced by the name on the gravestone when he wrote the song "Eleanor Rigby," which appeared on The Beatles album "Revolver" (1966) and as a 45 rpm single. The song was nominated for three Grammy Awards, winning the Best Contemporary (R&R) Vocal Performance, Male or Female Grammy for Paul McCartney in 1967. The actual Eleanor Rigby was born in 1895, lived in Liverpool and worked as a scullery maid. She was married to a man named Thomas Woods and died on October 10, 1939, at age 44. Due to the inspiration of the song, her tombstone has become a popular landmark for Beatles fans visiting Liverpool. In 2004, the song was ranked number 137 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
