Eva Besnyö was a photographer of Jewish-Hungarian descent who lived and worked for many years in the Netherlands. Her father was Bernat Besnyö and her mother was Ilonka Kelemen. Eva moved to Berlin when she was twenty to study photography. Two years later, she moved to Amsterdam. In the 1930's she became active with other artists in various protests against the Nazi's, including a 1936 protest against the Berlin Olympics. She went underground for two years during the later part of the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. After the war she had two children with Wim Brusse, a graphic designer. In the 1970's she was active in the Dolle-Mina feminist movement for women's rights. In 1980 she declined a Dutch knighthood, but in 1990 she accepted the Dr. Erich Salomon Award for lifetime achievements (Berlin). That same year the Stedelijk Museum of contemporary art and design put on an exhibition of her work in Amsterdam.
