He was mortally wounded in the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 12, 1864, and died in a Union hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. His stone says Battle of the Wilderness, but other sources dispute that.

John Snyder was a member of Company B, Second Virginia Infantry, Stonewall Brigade
