Docia married Bob Slagle whose parents had moved to Swain County during the 1880's. Bob and Docia lived in the Cherry Cove near Sawmill Hill Freewill Baptist Church when their family was young, but moved to the head of Bone Valley (above Proctor)around 1937. They lived in the historic Hall Cabin which was located near the Kress family's summer home. Docia did the laundry for the Kresses and Bob worked as a caretaker for their place, in addition to working as a game warden. My mother, Violet Slagle, was only twelve years old when they moved, as she had to walk several miles out of Bone Valley to attend school at Proctor, then later to catch the bus to Swain High School. When the GSMNP took over, Docia and Bob moved to Robbinsville. Bob worked at the Fontana Hospital and was a custodian at the Fontana School during the construction of Fontana Dam. In the late 40's, they moved with their son Fred to the Pinhook Community in Graham County. After Bob died in 1951, Docia continued to live there until the mid 1970's when she moved into a retirement home in Franklin, NC. She remained there until she died.
