Angus 'Hanks' Young was born on 14 Dec 1822 in Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada, son of Archibald Young and Mary McDonald. He emigrated to the U.S. around 1850 and worked on the railroad in Burke, NY, then found his way to southern Ohio shortly afterward. On 5 Aug 1854, he married Nancy Chapman in Ross County, Ohio. They had three children: Mary Ellen (25 Oct 1855 - 20 Jan 1904), George Edward (13 May 1860 - 4 Apr 1942), and Jeremiah M (8 Jun 1863 - 21 Jul 1941). He was step-father to Nancy's daughter Martha Jane Smith from her previous marriage.
Angus enlisted in the 73rd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteers Infantry, Company 'I', on 15 Feb 1864. He died from severe burns and wounds suffered on 25 Oct 1864 when a munitions car of a supply train exploded in northern Georgia not long before the siege of Atlanta. He was taken to a military hospital in Chattanooga where he died on 8 November 1864.
