Elias Houghtaling was born in 1837 in Davenport, Delaware Co, NY, the third of seven children born to John and Parley (Polly) Houghtaling.

He was married by H. H. Priest, Justice of the Peace to Miss Lovina Begeal on 14 Nov 1857 in Masonville, Delaware Co, NY, the second of five children born to the union of Samuel Begeal and Charlotte Barley.

Elias and Lovina had one son Lorenzo on 20 Feb 1860 in Hancock, Delaware Co, NY.

On 17 Aug 1862, Elias joined the fight against the rebels in the Civil War, enlisting as a Private in Co F, 144th New York Vol Infantry at Hancock, Delaware Co, NY.

He was promoted on 03 Dec 1863 to Corporal and fought in many battles, including Goose Creek, VA, Morris Island, SC, Fort Wagner, SC, John's Island, SC, Honey Hill, SC.

On the 30th of Nov 1864, he was mortally wounded at the battle of Honey Hill, SC. He was taken to the U.S. General Hospital at Beaufort, Beaufort Co, SC where he died on 26 Dec 1864.

Elias and Lovina's only son Lorenzo died on 20 Jan 1865 in Hale Eddy, Delaware Co, NY, just twenty five days after his father. Lorenzo was only 4 years and 11 months of age.

Lovina remarried circa 1866 to Pvt William Elijah Huyck, the eldest of five children born to the union of Peter Huyck, Jr and Esther Seeley.
