He was captured by the confederates in April 1863 and was held in Camp Ford, Texas from 9 Apr 1863 to 23 Oct 1863 when he was exchanged in New Orleans. He was discharged on 23 Oct 1863. He returned to Maine where he was in and out of the hospitals there for several years. The 1890 veterans census reports that he was paralyzed.
