Jeremiah "Jerry" Metcalf, the son of John and Frances Metcalf, married Sarah Gullick, the daughter of Mary H. Harris and Solomon Gullick. They were married December 14th, 1856 in Jefferson County, Arkansas. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Shelby County, Texas where they had nine children together, four daughters and five sons.

The 1850 US-Census for Civil District #12, Fayette County, Tennessee list the following information: John Metcalf age 54, Farmer, Married-Head of Household, birthplace North Carolina. Wife, Frances Metcalf age 44, birthplace South Carolina. Three children all born in Tennessee; Mary M. age 23, Jeremiah age 19, and Hugh H. age 15.

The Texas, Shelby County Census Records list Jerry's occupations as a farmer. But on April 2nd, 1862, Jerry left his wife and three young children to enlist into the Confederate States Army. He served as a Private, in Company A, 28th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Randal's) (1st Texas Lancers), and was a veteran of the Civil War.

The 1880 US-Census for Precinct 2, Shelby County, Texas (page 20 of 43) list: Jerry's wife Sarah Metcalf age 46-MS, Widowed-HOH-House Keeper, and seven children all born in Texas; Wesley J. age 16-Farming, Jane M. age 14, John S. age 12-Farming, Ida age 10, William F. age 7, James age 5, and Julia A. age 3. Also listed is Noel Thomas age 27-TX, Farmhand.
