Born to John and Lydia (Downing) Edmondson in Edgecombe county, North Carolina on 26 May 1805. On December 3, 1828, John married Nancy "Ann" Blount Parker in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Five known children survived: Mary, Ellen Jane, Lavenia Parker, Danford and William Henry. Mercifully, Ann died prior to the outbreak of the Civil War which claimed her husband John and her son, William Henry.
John served in the Confederate States Army, Company D, 24th Infantry Regiment for North Carolina. His son, William Henry died in Spotslyvania while working as an assistant surgeon in 1864.
