She was the second wife of Stephen Sumner Phelps, the founder of Oquawka, one of the earliest settlers in this region. She was a daughter of Lewis and Lucy Patterson originally from Ohio, who had moved their family to Ohio about 1824. She was a sister of Mrs. Rodliff Allen of Monmouth, Illinois. She married S.S. Phelps in Warren Co., IL on Nov. 1, 1838 and became step-mother to his six children. Together they were parents to four additional children: Phebe, Henry, Susan, and Stephen.

Her sister Minerva Patterson Park is also buried in this cemetery.
