Enlisted at age 18 on 10 May 1862 at Henderson, Granville Co., NC. He was mustered into Capt. Samuel J. Parham's Company K (Carolina Boys) of the 54th N.C. Regiment at Camp Mangum on 20 May 1862. Hospitalized with chronic bronchitis at Farmville, Va. from 11 June 1862 to 1 July 1862. On 1 July 1862 he was sent to the fortifications at Richmond, Va. He returned to the hospital at Farmville, Va. on 12 Nov 1862 complaining of diarrhea and remained there until 3 Jan 1863. On 7 Nov 1863 he was captured at Rappahannock and transferred to Point Lookout, Md. where he remained until 24 Feb 1865 when he was exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Va. On the 3 March 1865 he appeared on the roll of Paroled Sick at General Hospital Camp Winder Richmond, Va.
He married Mary Ann Ball, daughter of John W. Ball and Sarah Mildred Ball, on 13 May 1868 in Granville Co, NC. She died ca 1886, her place of burial unknown.
