Elizabeth Jefferds was the mother of Vincent Jefferds out of wedlock. She never married, and she took to her grave the identity of Vincent's father. One candidate for Vincent's father has been, through the years, Nathaniel Jefferds, a contemporary cousin of Elizabeth. This has never been proved, but DNA testing may (or may not) support this hypothesis. Any direct male descendants surnamed Jefferds of Samuel Jefferds are urged to submit a Y-DNA sample to FamilyTreeDNA.

A letter of Dec 15,1936 from Lilla Dodge to cousin Alice Darling (Jefferds) Linton states the following:
"Now grandfather Jefferds was an illegitimate child - didn't you know that? As I understand it, his father was a cousin to his mother. I don't know if his name was Jefferds. Mother said she took her own name - and was a lovely woman."

An Apr 16,1934 letter from Carrie I (Waters) Fitts to Angeline (Jefferds) Burley states the following:
"When I was quite small, your grandfather gave me his birthplace as Wells for my birthday book. In any information my mother had, it didn't seem certain who your great-grandfather was, but it was believed he might have been the son of (or??) a brother of Maj.William Jefferds who remained in Wells."
