Story of the Sargent Family 7-4-1972
by Ella Peterson Sargent
Lee used to say that I knew more about his family than he did, but I'm afraid my knowledge is quite sketchy. One story his Grandpa Charles A. Sargent used to tell us about his first experience in Minnesota when he was only five years old. His father, Edwin A. Sargent, came from the East with his family in 1855. They came up the Mississippi River from La Crosses. They left the boat at Red Wing, Minnesota, and got lodgings at a hotel on the water front. While there he purchased equipment for the farm homestead he hoped to buy farther out in the country at Wastedo, Minnesota. One of his purchases was a large wagon and a team of spirited horses. He was anxious to try out the 'rig' so one morning he and little Charles took a ride out West Main Street, which was then a sea of mud. On the way, the team became restless and ran away and Edwin was unable to stop them until they reached the potteries. Naturally Charles was very excited, but all his father said was, "Don't tell your mother about this run-away. She'd worry". (Husbands haven't changed much in this respect to this day.)

The family made it out to their homestead, possibly 30 miles from Red Wing, Minnesota. There Edwin farmed and ran a country store for many years. He finally moved to Burnside, Minnesota near Red Wing, Minnesota where he built the brick house, and other substantial buildings. He had several children, a son Harry, who lived in California many years, and a daughter, Mrs. Minnie Meacham, who lived in St. Paul Minnesota much of her life. Edwin also had another daughter, who married a Rev. Hart, who was Grandma Rose's brother. I believe there were others, too, but I did not know them.

After Edwin's first wife's death, he married a relative of the Mc Intyre's of Red Wing, Minnesota. They moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he did well in the real estate business. I understand Sargent Avenue in that city was named for him. Some where I heard that he was a very well-dressed and interesting man.

I belive his first wife was Abbie Currier. I rally don't know much about her, except that they were married in 1847. Her name, Abbie, was Clara Grant's middle name, and the name Currier is carried on in that of James Currier Sargent, Plato's son.

The name E. A. Sargent is briefly mentioned in J. W. Hancock's HISTORY OF GOODHUE COUNTY. Edwin A. Sargent was a colonel in the 11th Minnesota regiment during the Civil War.
