She moved to Stephenson Co., Illinois as a young girl, and at the time of her death lived in Kent Township six miles southwest of Lena. Mrs. Hughes was diagnosed with rheumatism by her doctor and suffered for several months before finally dying at her home at 6:30 in the morning on June 16, 1888. She left behind her husband and seven children.
