BISMARCK, N.D. - Valerie Sue Lovejoy passed into the spirit world on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Fort Yates, peacefully in her sleep. Valerie was 68 years old and lived in Longview, Texas for the past 35 years. She was known by her friends from Longview as "Indian Sioux."

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fort Yates, with the Rev. Canon John Floberg officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke's Episcopal Cemetery of Fort Yates.

Valerie was born September 7, 1939, in Fort Yates, to James and Alice Harris Lovejoy. She was raised in Fort Yates and educated at Flandreau, South Dakota.

She married Frank Brave Bull in 1955, in Fort Yates. Frank and Valerie had eight children. She was a police woman from 1960-1963, and the first Native American police woman in North Dakota. She also worked as a nurse and, in her final years, as a bartender.

Valerie was a free spirit who loved horses, barrel racing, playing pool and motorcycles. She treasured her family at the Sundance, friends in Longview and many people at the Outlaws Establishment. Valerie loved and treasured her little dog, Crawford.

Valerie was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Claude and Edward Brave Bull; one sister, Marlene Lovejoy Duboise; and five brothers, James, Gerald, Duane, Michael and Steven Lovejoy.

She is survived by her three daughters and two son-in-laws, LaDonna and Miles Allard of Fort Yates, Valmarie "Kelly" and Joe Green of Gilmer, Texas, and Marty Jo Brave Bull of Lawrence, Kansas; two sons, Randall Brave Bull of Fort Yates, and Curtis Brave Bull of Cannon Ball; five sisters, Dorothy Harrison of Zion, Illinois, Loretta Wright of Fort Yates, Opal Lovejoy of Denver, Colorado, Mary Ann Lovejoy of Denver, Colorado, and Inez Faye Lovejoy of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three brothers, Robert Barnes of St. Paul, Minnesota, Ron Lovejoy and Merle Lovejoy, both of Eagle Butte, South Dakota; 10 grandchildren, William, Philip, Freedom, Prairie, Jason, Nicole, Levon, Jon, Randall Jr. and John Ross; six great-grandchildren, Sky, Leszek, LaTayus, Donnie Wan, Jacob and Nataya; and the many friends in Longview, Texas.
