Richardson grabbed his daughter just before the car slammed them into a fence. He saw what was going to happen and did a most beautiful thing. He grabbed his daughter and held her up in the air and tried to shield her in an attempt to save her life.
Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene. Kaniyah was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in serious condition with severe pelvic injuries. She is expected to survive.
The driver of the car, a 33 year old Chicago man, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated DUI. The Chicago Tribune reported the driver has never had a drivers license and that he lived across a courtyard from Kaniyah, her two siblings and her mother.
Joseph was an accomplished musician, playing the piano and organ in choirs at Cottage Grove Baptist Church and Greater Revelation MB Church where his father ministers. His father is the Rev. L.V. Richardson and was quoted as saying "It's hurt me pretty bad, but the Lord's going to keep me moving on."
About eight years ago, Bishop Roosevelt Adams sought a musician for the nearby Cottage Grove Holy Temple Missionary Baptist Churchand Joseph Richardson came highly recommended. He could play just about any instrument and soon Richardson took on responsibilities teaching Cottage Grove's choirs and "confessed" his call to ministry. He had hopes of becoming a minister himself. Mr. Richardson was a devoted parent and often brough his children to the choir practices he taught. He was trying to share his talent with musical instruments with his oldest child, a 10 year-old son.
Mr. Richardson was also a twin. His twin brother Timothy said that all day he had had a sense that something terrible was going to happen. When he was home he could feel his twin brother and could visualize what had happened, right before they called him to tell him the bad news. Timothy said he could see his twin being in an accident and he just knew that he was gone, before the call to tell him what had happened.
Mr. Richardson's swift and heroic efforts likely saved his daughters life. I'm sure there is a special place for Mr. Richardson.
