Born in Covington County, Alabama, on 13 January 1915 to Hiram Thomas Helms (1885-1968) and Mary Elizabeth Tison (Tyson) (1890-1915). Her mother died a few months after Rubie's birth and she was raised by her mother's sister, Lovie Emma Tison (Tyson)(1894-1966), who her father also married. Rubie was raised in Niceville, FL, and attended Niceville High School where she excelled in basketball and tennis. After graduation from H/S she married Moses Conrad Wright (1917-2002) on 7 May 1938. She and Moses had four children which they raised in Dixie County, Florida: William Hiram Wright (1939-1961); James Campbell Wright (1942-), George Abercrombie Wright (1944-) and Mary Allison Wright (1946-).
