Betty was born on January 26, 1919 in Walback, NE., the daughter of John and Tillie (Furmonski) Smollen. She married Glenn Alsup on January 8, 1946 in Indianapolis, IN, and he died on April 30, 1971. Betty and her husband had farmed near Redgranite for many years, and after his death she moved to Berlin.
Betty was employed as a cutter of athletic uniforms for the Medalist Sand Knit Corp. of Berlin. She was a faithful member of the All Saints Catholic Parish of Berlin, the Ladies sodality of the parish and the Berlin Senior Citizen Center. She loved baking and sewing but most of all spending time with her family and helping other people and would drive them to their doctor appointments, get groceries or whatever they needed done.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet Mischka of Oak Creek and Beverly (Don) Brown of Malone; also two brothers, Frank (Alice) Smollen and Alfred (Maureen) Smollen, both of Grand Island, NE; also two sisters, Edna (Arthur) Scarpa of Lakewood, CA, and Esther (William) Meister of Grand Island, NE. 6 grandchildren, Cheryl (Jeff) Goff, Scott Brown, Terra Brown and fiancee Jon Meinen, Jim Brown, Ryan (Rose Ann) Mischka, and Courtney Mischka, and 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, John and Robert Smollen and a sister Dorothy Kosinski.
Funeral services with a Mass of Christian Burial will be held Feb. 8, 2007 at Saint Michael's Catholic Church and burial in Saint Mark's Catholic Parish Cemetery in Redgranite.
