Actor. He was best known to film viewers for the numerous character roles he portrayed during a career that spanned from 1960s to the early 21st Century. After serving in the U.S. Army and studying both radio and television studies and theater arts at Texas Christian University, he went to New York City to study acting with famed teacher Sanford Meisner. He made his acting debut in the 1966 Off-Broadway musical "Viet Rock." A year later, he made his television debut on the series "Dark Shadows." His later television credits would include such productions as "N.Y.P.D.," "Mrs. Columbo," "Quo Vadis?," "21 Jump Street," "Die Kinder," and "Murphy Brown." In 1968, he made his film debut in "The Filthy Five." He went on to appear in such films as: "When the Legends Die" (1972), "The Conversation" (1974), "The Missouri Breaks" (1976), "Apocalypse Now" (1979), "The Rose" (1979), "Hammett" (1982), "One from the Heart" (1982), "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" (1988), "The Two Jakes" (1990), "Falling Down" (1993) and "Lassie" (1994). His role as Huston Dyer in the film "The Rose" earned him a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination in 1980. He passed away after a long illness.
