Painter. She was a 19th century English Orientalist artist, who was the wife of highly-respected artist Joseph Austin Benwell. Documents suggest that the two traveled together throughout the Middle East, especially Egypt. In the 1978 text, "The Dictionary of Victorian Painters" by Christopher Wood , she is enumerated next to her name and as exhibiting at the Suffolk Street gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists. She exhibited her watercolors of Italy and Egypt, which included "Italian Lake Scene" in 1870, "Isola Bella, Maggiore" in 1871, and "Adrian's Villa, Tivoli" in 1872 as they are listed in "Works Exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, 1824-1893 and the New English Art Club, 1888-1917." She and her husband had paintings included in the same exhibitions during the London International Exhibitions of 1871, 1873, and 1874 in South Kensington. In the 1873 London International Exhibition, her watercolor is listed on page 20: Benwell, Mrs Marian - No. 497 "Boulak, the Port of Cairo" 15 guineas. She married Benwell on July 13, 1854 at the Church of St George, Bloomsbury, London Sources state that there were no surviving children. None of her watercolors survived to the 21st century and the once-upright tombstone that she shares with her husband has fallen flat on the ground and the inscription faded with time.
