OBITUARY
Byron Swain was born in Wayne Co., Indiana Dec. 4, 1845, died in Lawrence, Kan., April 7, 1864, aged 78 years 4 mos. [This date is undoubtedly in error--probably April 7, 1924]
He came to Kansas with his parents in 1857, volunteered in a Cavalry regiment in the Civil war, where he spent two years. He was married to Ruthann Carey in September 1859, who died March 1910. To this union were born four boys, Alton, Herbert, Clyde and Roscoe.
Besides the four sons there were 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. In Sept. 18, 1918 he was married to Mary Swain who survives him. He had a birthright membership in the
Friends church, and was a member of that church in Lawrence when he died was a consistent christian and ever ready to lend a helping hand in every good cause. He had been
gradually failing in health until a few days before he died when he sank rapidly and quietly fell asleep to suffer no more.
