James Gillingham (Gilliland, Gilleland) was born on 6 April 1831 in Carnaveagh, County Monaghan, Ireland, a son of William Gilliland (Gilleland) and Mary Ann Moore. He was baptized at the Presbyterian church in Creeve, County Monaghan, Ireland on 22 May 1831.

His father's surname was generally recorded as Gilliland in Carnaveagh and Gilleland in Rhode Island.

James Gilleland ("Gilliand") arrived in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts on 30 August 1847 ("1 September 1846" per his personal recollection) on the ship Oneco from Liverpool together with his parents and siblings. His maternal uncles James Moore and Alexander Moore (Jr.) and maiden aunt Nancy Moore were already living in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. The Moore siblings were natives of Carnaveagh, County Monaghan, Ireland and children of Alexander Moore (Sr.) and Agnes Horner ("Nancy").

By 13 August 1850, the family of William Gilleland ("Guillerland") and Mary Ann Moore was living in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island just south of Providence.

James Gilleland became a housewright (carpenter).

By 1853, James Gilleland ("Gillelan") had removed to New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

He removed to Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts by 26 April 1855 when he petitioned to become a naturalized citizen of the United States of America, having decided on the surname Gillingham and signing his name as such.

James Gillingham removed to Charlestown, Middlesex County (present-day Suffolk County), Massachusetts by 7 November 1858.

By May 1863, James Gillingham was residing in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York and on 7 June 1865 he was working as a ship's carpenter.

By 6 June 1870, James Gillingham had removed to Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey.

By 23 February 1872, he was living in Manhattan.

By 7 June 1880, James Gillingham resided in Oyster Bay, Queens County (present-day Nassau County), New York where he worked as a carpenter and farmed.

On 11 July 1899, Nancy Moore of New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts mentioned her "deceased nephew James Gillingham" in her will.
