Juan Mariano Martín Pacheco y Carrillo was born at Monterey, Alta California, México, where he was baptized the next day in the Presidio Chapel (SC Baptism 03523). He was the son of álferez (ensign) Romualdo Pacheco y Mendo and Ramona Carrillo y López. He married María del Pilar Francisca Ortega y Cota at Mission Santa Bárbara on November 29, 1850. He died on his Rancho Piedra Blanca January 26, 1865, and was buried there due to the winter rains making the streams and rivers impassable. Padre Pedro Sastre conducted an anniversary mass at Mission San Luís Obispo de Tolosa the following year. With the traditional year of mourning behind her, Francisca married (2) widower Juan Castro y Peralta at Mission San Luís Obispo on April 17, 1866.

(translation of Death Record 3064: "On January 26, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six, a one-year anniversary mass was sung in homage to the soul of Mariano Pacheco, who died on the same day last year without being able to receive the holy sacraments due to the waters and distance from this place. He was married to Francisca Ortega, [he was] 37 years old, son of Romualdo and Ramona Carrillo. His corpse was buried at his own ranch called Piedra Blanca, because no one could cross the rivers and bring him to the mission. What did I miss? Pedro Sastre.")

Piedra Blanca is near by around 5 miles or less north of the original town of San Simeon
He bought this Rancho from Guadalupe Cantua, on Aug 30 1859, of around 27.000 arces or 6 Leagues.
Mariano also was elected to the state legislature and served a single term before poor health forced him to retire in 1853
