June Middleton Albaugh of Nantucket died peacefully Friday, Sept 13, 2019 at Our Island Home, surrounded by her family. She was 94.
Born Dec 30, 1924 in Andalusia, Ala, June showed an early interest in the arts and music, which she pursued at Alabama College-Montevallo, graduating in 1947.
She continued her study of music at Columbia and Juilliard in New York City.
Upon her return to Alabama as a piano teacher, she met and fell in loved with her husband, Bud Albaugh. Before the wedding, June went ahead with long-planned bicycle tour of the United Kingdom with her friend Kitty, revealing an adventurous streak.
After the wedding, she settled in her husband's hometown of Short Hills, NJ, where she began married life as a homemaker and raised three daughters.
She was a member of Christ Church and an active volunteer in The Junior League, president of the local chapter of the garden club, and president of the state chapters of the Colonial Dames and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Her love of American history fostered an interest in genealogy, including co-authoring the book, "Collirene, The Queen Hill."
While living in Short Hills, June learned to play tennis and golf and continued to enjoy these sports at the family summer home on Nantucket, where she was a member of the Sankaty Head Gold and Beach Club and the Siasconset Casino, as well as St Paul's Episcopal Church.
In 2005, she moved to Nantucket as a year-round resident.
June was known for her love of gardening, and her floral arrangements were greatly admired. Her holiday decorations were creative and always brightened the seasons for young and old. June's love of cats was lifelong, and she always fostered cats in her later years. She was also a lifelong supporter of the Southern Poverty Law Center and Planned Parenthood.
June was predeceased by her parents, William Middleton and Mary Clyde Pelham; her brothers, William and Tom; and her beloved husband, Hamilton Castner "Bud" Albaugh Jr.
She is survived by her daughters…; three grandchildren…; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful Our Island Home for its staff who provided such compassionate care to "June Bug" and for its peaceful harbor view.
A private family service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation of the charity of one's choice.
