U.S. Senator. He served in the United States Senate from the state of Utah from January 3, 1977 to January 3, 2019. He earned his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1959 and later earned his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962. From 1963 to 1969, he worked as a lawyer in Pittsburgh before relocating his practice to Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1976, he decided to run, as a Republican, for the United States Senate seat held by Democratic Sen. Frank Moss and was successful in the November general election that year. He went on to serve in the Senate for seven terms before deciding to step down in 2018. During his tenure in the Senate, he was consistently recognized as a crusader of conservative values. He served as the chairman of several Senate committees (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Judiciary, Finance, and Joint Pensions). He also served as the President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 2015 to 2019. Despite his ardent conservatism, he did work with such Democrats as Sens. Edward Kennedy and Dick Durbin on numerous issues. During his life, he received numerous awards and honors such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
