A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg March 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there May 7 as a private with Co. H, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865. Although he had written parental permission to enlist at age fifteen, he still overstated his age by one year by claiming to be sixteen.
After the war, he married Catherine Lyne January 13, 1867, in Middletown, Dauphin County, and fathered William (b. @1867), Lewis C. (b. 07/08/70), Georgianna (b. @1873 - married Linwood B. Wanbaugh), Harry Lyne (b. 09/03/75), and Ida (b. @1878).
Son William moved to Cook County, Illinois. Found in 1910 & 1920 Census. Died there 2 Jan 1921
