Kyouji was seven years old when she was killed in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Immediately after the earthquake, her grandmother rushed to the childrens' school to pick them up; the three then headed to the city's designated evacuation center, the Kitakami General Branch. However, when the tsunami wave struck, this center was flooded, its desperate refugees washed away. Naruko, Hodaka, and Kyouji were all drowned.
