Iranian President. He served as the 1st President of Iran from February 4, 1980 to June 22, 1981. He studied religion and economics at the University of Tehran and spent four years at the Institute of Social Research. In the early 1960s, he became a leader of the anti-shah student movement and was jailed twice for his political activities. He later traveled to France after being wounded in an unsuccessful uprising in 1963. In France, he continued his studies and later earned his doctorate. While in France, he joined the entourage of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and returned to Iran with Khomeini in February of 1979. After Khomeini took power in Iran, he joined the government and later served as minister of economy and finance. In January of 1980, he was elected the first president of the Islamic Republic of Iran and went on to assume the position of chairman of the Revolutionary Council. During his presidency, he not only struggled with his enemies among the ruling clergy, but also with economic problems and the Iran-Iraq war, that started in 1980. In June of 1981, he was impeached by the parliament and removed from office. Following his impeachment, he fled Iran and found political asylum in France. He later focused on political writings about his activities during the Iranian revolution and his critiques of the Iranian government. He also became a critic of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the country's handling of its 2009 elections. He died after a long illness.
