Iola Burgess Allen, 92, died peacefully Nov. 29, 2007, in her home surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A native of Camden County, Old Trap, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Edgar Burgess and Mae Bell Forbes Burgess. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ravanell Cleveland Allen Sr. and is survived by three sons, Irving Lee Allen and his wife Bettie of Virginia Beach, R.C. Allen Jr. and his wife Florence of Norfolk and Allan Ray Allen and his wife Cathy of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Chloe Kight of Thomasville, N.C. She was predeceased by four sisters, Ella Mae Hornbake, Florence Pierce, Margaret Pierce and Gladys Pritchard; and two brothers, Marvin King and Joe King. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Allen was a charter member of Riverside Baptist Church, Norfolk. She was very active in her church in earlier years and did volunteer work with the American Red Cross. The family will receive friends in Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462, Monday at 1:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. following the visitation in the adjoining Rosewood Memorial Park. The family would like to extend deepest gratitude to the Sentara Hospice staff members for their dedication, care and invaluable assistance.
