Published: Sunday, July 30, 2006 at 4:30 a.m.

Margaret Arnette "Granny" Ballard, 70, of Henderson County was granted her wings and was delivered to her heavenly home with the Lord on Friday, July 28, 2006.

She was born June 18, 1936, in the Big Willow community to the late Hugh Almond "Hammie" Johnson and Martha Ellen Cantrell Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Dan Johnson.

She had a true passion for nature and love for fishing and camping. She was baptized into the Baptist faith. She attended Buelah Baptist Church, Fairhaven Baptist Church and the First Church of the Nazarene.

She was known to all as "Granny" and embraced the love of being a homemaker and grandmother to 30 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She worked as a landscaper for 30 years and later as a caregiver to the elderly. Granny loved and lived for her family and friends to ensure joy and happiness to all of those who surrounded her. Her hobbies included gardening, crocheting, painting, quilting, sewing and watching her Atlanta Braves.

She taught her children to embrace life and to be loving, caring and forgiving and to never "sweat the small stuff." She knew how to survive and make something out of nothing.

Her love of the Lord shown through her gospel singing with her 10 siblings. They were known around the area as the Johnson Family Singers. She enjoyed every moment she had with her siblings and family at each reunion.

She was given her eternal rest after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.

As she becomes an angel, she leaves behind her loving daughters, Rebecca and husband, Robert Barwick, of Hendersonville, Beverly and husband, Dale Skiba, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Brenda and husband, Joey Penland, of Fairview; her sons, Ken Ballard and wife, Carla Lynn, of Arden and Brian Ballard and wife, Chrisie Johnson, of Etowah; her former husband, Kenneth Ray Ballard Sr.; eight sisters; a brother; 21 nieces; 30 nephews; and 54 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Granny had a lot of love to give and gave it to numerous honorary grandchildren.

We would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Murphy for his dedicated care given to our Granny. To Sandee Barnwell and the staff of Cardinal Care Center, thank you for the love and care given to Granny in the last miles of her journey.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Forest Lawn Mortuary. The Rev. Don Birchfield of Faith Chapel Baptist Church will officiate. The family will receive friends at the home of granddaughter Tasha Lowe, 76 McKinney Drive, Etowah.

Forest Lawn Mortuary is assisting the family with the arrangements.
