Lived in regal state amongst the mountains of Badenoch.
Lord of Badenoch and the 3rd Earl of Buchan.
To this chieftain is ascribed the building of the castles, Inverlochy and Lochindorb
The possessions of his kinsman of Menteith fell to him which gave him fresh weight in the north
John married Eleanor de Balliol, daughter of John de Balliol and Dervorguilla of Galloway
Succeeded to his father's lands in Tynedale.
Was present in 1281 at the convention of Roxburgh, where the marriage of Margaret, daughter of Alexander III was agreed upon.
On the death of Alexander III on the 19th of March 1285, John "The Black" Comyn, Lord of Badenoch was one of the six great barons selected to act as guardians of the kingdom during the minority of his grand daughter, Margaret, "The Maid of Norway".
In 1286 "The Black" Comyn went as an ambassador to treat with the King of Norway as to the marriage of the maid.
